History of the Chamber

Before Exeter became a city, a group of business owners came together as the Board of Trade to advocate for services that were needed for everyone’s benefit. These services included watering and tamping down the sand-based streets, providing a water system for the businesses and community, and marketing to others to entice them to bring their businesses to the area.

In 1909, the predecessor of the Exeter Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trade, held a Citrus Fair which attracted great crowds from not only the county but from far and wide. The fair was seen as an “unqualified success.”Since those early days, Exeter businesses have known what others are just now figuring out.
